“The migration-mobilities continuum: Rethinking migration as political demography”

Adrian Favell – University College Cork

Migration is only a fraction of the story. Since the 1980s, cross-border movement has grown exponentially, yet research on population mobility remains locked onto the migrant as its defining figure. Decades of critique have not shifted it. The frame persists. This talk presents the theoretical framework of the Global Mobilities Project: a historical genealogy of what Favell calls the migration-mobilities continuum, tracing its arc from the post-war settlement through the neoliberal era, the COVID interregnum, and into what comes next. The governance questions this raises are not marginal. These dynamics are fuelling populist politics across the world and driving the rapid multiplication of selective, extractive, and exclusionary categories of migrant labour and asylum, especially outside the North Atlantic West.
