Marcelo J. Borges (Iméra, Dickinson College)

Emotions have played a crucial role in the life experience of migrants and in the cultural, social, and political dynamics generated by people’s mobility. This talk presents a framework for this analysis and shares some examples from a book-in-progress. Bringing together the perspective of migration history and the history of emotions, the book considers how emotions associated with migration have been constructed, negotiated, and deployed over time. It seeks to uncover the emotional dynamics that contributed to shaping the experiences of migrants and their families and the ways that migrants have been perceived by diverse societies in different historical moments. The analysis considers the emotional dynamics of migration over a long historical period—from the growth of transoceanic labor mobility ushered by the expansion of capitalist and imperialism and the consolidation of nation-states in the 1870s to the alleged migration crisis of 2015.
